The USGS Consortium: How does it work?
Initially, the core service of the Consortium is a website and searchable on-line database created and maintained by American Councils. The password-protected site contains profiles of individuals from Eurasia interested in pursuing graduate degrees in the United States. Each profile contains detailed information supplied by the prospective student along with information collected and verified by American Councils.

Members of the USGS Consortium will have access to the database, with the ability to search for

Advantages of networking with the U.S. Graduate School Consortium:
- Search profiles quickly and easily
- Maximum exposure to high-quality potential applicants
- Affordable alternative to overseas recruiting
- Expert advice on Eurasia and Eastern Europe from Consortium staff
- Exposure to new grant and scholarship opportunities
prospective candidates by criteria including field of study, educational background, employment history, country of citizenship, etc. Once specific candidates are identified by Consortium members, American Councils staff will be available to provide follow-up assistance in contacting and advising prospective students.

In order to promote Consortium institutions and their offerings, American Councils will post profiles of Consortium institutions on the website. Consortium institutions can update their profiles at will with additional web links, announcements of opportunities for financial assistance, and other relevant items.

American Councils will promote the Consortium by:

  • Conducting informational seminars in key cities
  • Placing advertisements in American Councils’ offices throughout the region, at Educational Advising Centers, American Corners, Eurasian universities, and other centers for students interested in pursuing graduate study in the U.S.
  • Facilitating participation of Consortium members in Educational Fairs (in the Education USA network) throughout the region sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s “Education USA” initiative. These fairs take place each year in the fall (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tashkent, Bishkek) and spring (Baku, Almaty, Astana)
  • Providing direct contact with previous applicants and program alumni
